Alistair Love

Equine Partner

BVSc Cert AVP (EP) MRCVS RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner

Alistair grew up locally before studying at the University of Liverpool and graduating in 2008. He returned back to the local area soon after graduating and has been at the practice for over 14 years now.

He holds the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Equine Practice and is an RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Equine Practice. He became a partner in April 2019 and holds the Post Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Business Management to ensure we continue to offer the highest levels of service to our clients. Alistair enjoys seeing a wide and varied equine case load and prides himself in delivering the highest possible levels of service.

He is committed to making sure our horses can compete at the highest level and are comfortable in their work and believes in taking a thorough whole horse approach to every case he sees to make sure every detail is covered. Alistair has a passion for dealing with difficult and challenging cases (as well as difficult and challenging horses). He works with difficult horses to improve their behaviour, making dealing with them less stressful for all concerned. He is enthusiastic about furthering knowledge and has lectured to vets, farriers and physiotherapists at conferences. He organises a yearly meeting on behalf of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) to help get high quality veterinary education to vets from all over the North of England.

He strongly believes in helping people to prevent or reduce illness in their horses through education and has regularly consulted on and contributed to articles in Your Horse Magazine. He organises Clevedale’s Equine Educational Evenings and speaks at evening and day courses for the British Horse Society. In 2021 Alistair was presented with a British Horse Society National Equine Welfare Award for his exceptional work in Equine Education and for providing support to his local BHS Welfare Team.

In his spare time Alistair enjoys spending time with his three young children and loves playing football and racquet sports (when he gets chance).

Len Metcalfe

Partner & Veterinary Surgeon

BVMS MRCVS

Len has been a vet in mixed practice for the whole of his career since graduating from Glasgow University in 1990.

During that time he has built up considerable experience in all species. Over the years some of his particular interests have been working with cattle both, dairy and beef. He has also spent a lot of time working with horses dealing particularly with lameness problems and with equine fertility and artificial insemination. In addition Len has spent a lot of time working with peoples’ pet cats and dogs. It is in this field of veterinary practice that he currently spends most of his time. He is particularly interested in all aspects of surgery as well as the diagnosis, management and treatment of complex medical cases.

When not at work Len is to be found pursuing one of his many activities in the outdoors. He spends a lot of time on the moors on his mountain bike. He enjoys fishing, both on rivers and at sea in his kayak. Len is also a keen gardener. Finally, when time allows he likes to walk, train and work his two very energetic cocker spaniels Gem and Snipe.

Andrew Knox

Partner & Veterinary Surgeon

BVMS MRCVS

Andrew qualified as a vet from Glasgow University in 1982 and has spent the last thirty years working in Cleveland and North Yorkshire.

Together with Len Metcalfe he founded Clevedale Veterinary Practice in 1993 and has helped steer the business from humble beginnings to the successful multicentre veterinary practice that exists today.

Andrew holds the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Business Management ensuring that he can ensure the practice continues to provide the highest levels of service.

Andrew has previously enjoyed working with farm animals, especially cattle, but is now enjoying the challenge of working with small animals exclusively.

When not at work, Andrew is usually to be found walking his dogs on the hills or riding one of his bikes around the North Yorkshire countryside.

Andrew Barber

Partner & Veterinary Surgeon

BVMS MRCVS

Andrew Barber qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1990 and after 3 years in mixed practice in Nottinghamshire, moved to Clevedale in November 1993 to concentrate on Farm animals.

Over the last 20 years, as the practice has diversified into all creatures great and small, Andrew has continued to concentrate on the "great" with emphasis on cattle and sheep herd/flock health and fertility.

Wendy Welford

Partner & Veterinary Surgeon

BVM&S (with distinction) MRCVS

After graduating from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh in 2007, Wendy spent her first year of qualified life in a truly mixed practice in North Wales, before joining the team at Clevedale Veterinary Practice in 2008.

Initially working as a genuine mixed vet at Clevedale Vets Wendy realised her interest in Farm Animal work and has pursued and developed this interest ever since. She now spends most mornings performing routine fertility visits on Dairy farms and has an interest in all aspects of Farm Animal medicine and surgery - especially displaced abomasum operations! She also has a passion for preventative farm work, creating Flock and Herd Health Plans and investigating disease / nutritional issues on a herd level. Wendy joined the partnership at Clevedale Vets in April 2014.

In her spare time she can often be found walking her two energetic working Cocker Spaniels around the farm (or occasionally running with them down Ridge Lane!)
